Mehbooba Mufti urges government to lift ban on Jamaat-e-Islami for elections
Key Highlights:
- PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti urges lifting the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami.
- Criticizes National Conference’s shifting stance on elections.
- Calls for the unfreezing of Jamaat-e-Islami assets to allow electoral participation.
PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti emphasized the importance of democracy as a “battle of ideas,” urging the government to lift the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami and allow the organization to participate in elections.
Speaking in Srinagar, she stressed that enabling Jamaat-e-Islami’s participation would be beneficial, calling for the unfreezing and return of its seized assets.
Mehbooba Mufti also criticized Omar Abdullah, the National Conference (NC) vice-president, for his recent remarks. Abdullah had noted that Jamaat-e-Islami once deemed elections “haram” (forbidden) but now considers them “halal” (permissible).
Mehbooba labeled these comments as “regrettable,” accusing the NC of conveniently shifting its stance on elections based on its position of power.
She pointed out that the NC had a history of labeling elections as “halal” only when it was in power, referencing the tenure of NC founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. According to Mehbooba, the NC had labeled elections “haram” when it was ousted, only to declare them “halal” again upon returning to power.
Mehbooba further highlighted that Jamaat-e-Islami and other groups, including the Muslim United Front (MUF), had participated in elections in the past, questioning who originally deemed their involvement “haram.”
She accused the NC of rigging the 1987 elections to suppress emerging political forces like the MUF, closing the doors to electoral participation for other parties.
The upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections will be held in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1, with results announced on October 4.
