Mattan Police Station Renamed as Humayun Muzammil Model Police Station

The Jammu and Kashmir Police made a poignant announcement on Monday, renaming the Mattan Police Station in Anantnag district of South Kashmir to the Humayun Muzammil Model Police Station. This tribute is in honor of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Humayun Bhat, who tragically lost his life during an encounter in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on September 13, 2023.

The renaming ceremony was presided over by Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh and was attended by the late DySP’s father, retired Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Hassan Bhat.

During his address, DGP Singh emphasized that the police had been searching for a fitting way to commemorate Humayun Muzammil in the Anantnag district ever since he made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Singh recounted the day of the encounter, highlighting the efforts made to rescue their colleague, who was injured along with some Army officers. Despite their best efforts, a timely evacuation proved elusive.

Singh shared that Muzammil had the opportunity to speak with his father and wife before his passing, raising hopes that a timely evacuation might have saved his life. Unfortunately, Singh noted that sometimes the circumstances on the ground determine outcomes beyond their control. He added that decisions about life’s journey are occasionally made elsewhere.

Humayun Muzammil was one of four security personnel who lost their lives during the encounter with militants in the Kokernag area on September 13. The operation spanned over six days and culminated in the elimination of two militants, during which two Army officers also lost their lives.

The renaming of the police station stands as a solemn tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of DySP Humayun Muzammil in the service of his community and the nation.
