Maldives Sets Deadline for India to Withdraw Troops
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has given India a deadline of March 15 to withdraw its troops from the island nation. The move follows the upgrading of ties with China after a diplomatic row between India and Maldives. The current Maldivian President, who came to power with the “India Out” campaign, had called for the withdrawal of Indian troops as a key election promise. The Indian High Commissioner and officials from both countries have initiated talks to negotiate the withdrawal of troops. Around 88 Indian troops are currently stationed in the Maldives, and the withdrawal request comes amid ongoing geopolitical shifts in the region.
