Maldives Minority Leader Calls for President’s Removal Amidst Diplomatic Row with India
On Monday, Ali Azim, the Parliamentary Minority leader in the Maldives, urged the removal of President Mohamed Muizzu amidst a controversy over derogatory remarks made by a Maldives minister against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Azim, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the country’s foreign policy stability, called for a vote of no confidence motion against Muizzu.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Azim, representing the Democrats, expressed their commitment to upholding the stability of the nation’s foreign policy and preventing the isolation of any neighboring country. He questioned whether the party was prepared to take necessary steps to remove President @MMuizzu from power and if @MDPSecretariat was ready to initiate a vote of no confidence.
The controversy erupted when some Maldivian leaders made derogatory comments and mocked Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep. India strongly raised the issue with the Maldivian government, leading to condemnation from top opposition leaders in the island nation.
In a now-deleted post, Mariyam Shiuna, the Maldivian deputy minister of Youth Empowerment, made a mocking and disrespectful reference to Prime Minister Modi. The remarks prompted a strong response from India, with the Maldives government rejecting the derogatory comments and stating that they did not represent the views of Male.
On Sunday, the Maldivian government suspended three deputy ministers responsible for the derogatory social media posts against PM Modi. Ibrahim Khaleel, spokesperson for the president of Maldives, announced the immediate suspension of all government officials involved in the comments.
The controversy also led to an online campaign calling for a boycott of the Maldives and its tourist spots, with several Indian celebrities, including actors Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Salman Khan, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, and Aakash Chopra, joining in. The campaign followed Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep on January 2, where he shared pictures of the scenic beauty and encouraged adventure enthusiasts to include the union territory on their list.
