Mahua Moitra Challenges Lok Sabha Expulsion in Supreme Court Over ‘Cash for Query’ Allegations
Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra has taken legal action by approaching the Supreme Court to contest her recent expulsion from the Lok Sabha.
The expulsion, arising from the ‘cash for query’ corruption case, accused Moitra, 49, of receiving bribes, including Rs 2 crore in cash and luxury gifts, from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for raising critical questions about the government in Parliament.
Moreover, she was alleged to have shared login credentials, allowing Hiranandani to directly post these questions.
Despite denying the bribery allegations, Moitra admitted to sharing the login details, stating that such practices were commonplace among Members of Parliament.
An Ethics Committee report extensively critiqued Moitra’s actions, establishing clear evidence of accepting illegal gratification and emphasized that taking gifts from the businessman in return for login details constituted unethical conduct unbecoming of an MP.
The report’s tabling in Lok Sabha triggered intense debates between the opposition and the ruling BJP, eventually leading to a voice vote that upheld Moitra’s expulsion based on her alleged conduct being deemed immoral and indecent.
Moitra, denied the chance to speak during Lok Sabha proceedings, criticized the ethics panel outside Parliament, accusing it of flouting rules and predicting potential CBI investigations. Subsequently, the CBI has initiated an inquiry into the allegations against her.
Strongly contesting her expulsion, Moitra highlighted what she perceives as the Lok Sabha’s aggressive targeting of her as a first-term, single woman MP without political lineage, calling it a weaponization of parliamentary committees.
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned Moitra’s expulsion, labeling it unacceptable and a consequence of the BJP’s vendetta politics.
