In the wake of escalating air pollution levels in Delhi, Anand Mahindra, the chairman of the Mahindra Group, has proposed a transformative approach to address the environmental challenge. Through a video shared on social media, Mahindra advocated for ‘Regenerative Agriculture’ as a sustainable alternative to the prevalent practice of stubble burning, which significantly contributes to the deteriorating air quality in the national capital.

Understanding Regenerative Agriculture

Regenerative agriculture is a farming practice endorsed by the World Economic Forum (WEF) for its focus on improving soil health. This method is known to yield multiple benefits: it enhances food and nutrition production, bolsters carbon storage, and promotes biodiversity. Moreover, it reduces soil erosion, optimizes water usage, and minimizes pest issues.

Techniques and Global Adoption

This eco-friendly agricultural technique involves minimal ploughing, thus preserving carbon dioxide in the soil and maintaining its water absorption capacity. It also supports the preservation of essential fungal communities within the earth. Crop rotation, the use of organic waste like animal manure and compost, also play a crucial role in restoring soil nutrients. With one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions stemming from agriculture, this method offers a viable solution for environmental sustainability and is being adopted in various parts of the world, including Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Delhi-NCR’s Deteriorating Air Quality and Legal Interventions

The situation in Delhi-NCR has reached a critical point with the air quality index (AQI) plunging back into the ‘severe’ category. High pollution levels have prompted urgent action from the Supreme Court, directing the state governments of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan to immediately halt crop residue burning to protect the health of their citizens.
