Madras Regiment: Legacy of Valour on Display at Republic Day Parade

Captain Yash Dadal led the Madras Regiment, known as the Thambis, during the Republic Day parade on the 75th Republic Day. The troops, adorned with their hallmark headgear, the ‘Black Pom Pom,’ showcased the rich martial history of the Madras Regiment, dating back to 1750. The Assaye Elephant insignia symbolizes the regiment’s qualities of courage, endurance, sagacity, strength, confidence, obedience, and faithfulness.


Regiment’s Remarkable Achievements

In its glorious 265 years, the Madras Regiment has earned 45 Battle Honours, 14 Theatre Honours, 11 COAS unit citations, 52 GOC-in-C Unit Appreciations, 5 UN Force Commander Citations, 01 Ashoka Chakra, 5 Mahavir Chakra, 11 Kirti Chakra, 36 Vir Chakra, 49 Saurya Chakra, and numerous other gallantry and distinguished awards. The Thambis excelled not only in combat but also left a mark in adventure and sports, with 02 Arjuna Awards and representation in five Olympic games.


Motto and War Cry

The Madras Regiment lives by the motto: ‘Swadharme Nidhanam Shreyaha’ (It is a glory to die doing one’s duty). Their war cry, ‘Veer madrasi Adi Kollu Adi Kollu Adi,’ resonates with the spirit of courage and determination.


Republic Day Parade Showcases India’s Cultural Diversity and Military Prowess

The Republic Day parade highlighted India’s cultural diversity, military prowess, and growing Nari Shakti (women power). With the theme of ‘Viksit Bharat’ and ‘Bharat – Loktantra ki Matruka,’ the event featured an all-women Tri-Service contingent, women pilots in the Indian Air Force’s fly-past, and diverse performances representing different states and dance styles.
