Lok Sabha Lifts Suspension of Three Members

The Lok Sabha has lifted the suspension of three opposition members—K Jayakumar, Abdul Khaleque, and Vijay Kumar. The suspension, imposed during the winter session of Parliament for “violation of rules,” was revoked with effect from January 30, 2024. The cases of these members were referred to the Privileges Committee, and their suspension was initially until the submission of the committee’s report.

Winter Session Suspension and Privileges Committee Referral

During the winter session, an unprecedented 146 members were suspended from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for alleged rule violations. Most suspensions were for the remainder of the term of the winter session, with some cases sent to the Privileges Committee of the respective Houses. The opposition members faced suspension following protests related to a security breach incident in the Lok Sabha.

Revocation by Rajya Sabha Chairman

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has also revoked the suspension of 11 members of the House who were found guilty of breach of privilege by the House panel. The Chairman invoked his authority, including Rules 202 and 266, to lift their suspension, allowing them to attend the Special Address by President Droupadi Murmu on January 31, 2024. The revocation considered the members’ participation in the historic event of the President’s address to both Houses assembled together in the new Parliament building.
