Ahead of the second day of the winter session, important meetings and legislative activities took place, reflecting the dynamic nature of Indian politics and governance.
A significant meeting of the INDIA bloc Parliamentary leaders was held at the office of the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge. Initiated by Congress president Kharge, the meeting saw attendance from several key leaders, including AAP MP Raghav Chadha, whose suspension was recently revoked in the Rajya Sabha, and other prominent MPs.
Adjournment Motion Notice by Congress MP Manish Tewari
In the Lok Sabha, Congress MP Manish Tewari submitted an Adjournment Motion Notice, seeking a discussion on the death penalty of eight former Indian Navy personnel in Qatar. Tewari expressed concern over the lack of response from the Government on this issue, which he has been raising since August 2022.
Government to Move Jammu and Kashmir Bills
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to move two significant bills in the Lok Sabha – the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2023. These bills aim to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation Act of 2004 and are key to the Government’s legislative agenda.
Productive First Day of Winter Session
The first day of the Winter Session saw productive outcomes, including the passage of two bills. The Rajya Sabha also decided to lift the suspension of AAP MP Raghav Chadha. Additionally, reports on ‘The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023’, ‘The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023’, and ‘The Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023’ were tabled, indicating the government’s focus on legal and security reforms.
Post Office Act Repeal and Advocates (Amendment) Bill Passage
The Rajya Sabha passed a bill to repeal the Indian Post Office Act, 1898, amidst discussions over certain provisions and concerns about creating a “surveillance state.” The Lok Sabha passed the Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023, aligning with the government’s policy of repealing obsolete laws and amending the Advocates Act, 1961, to incorporate provisions of the Legal Practitioners Act, 1879.
These developments showcase the Indian Parliament’s active engagement in legislative reform, addressing both domestic and international issues of significance.
