Late Dussehra Date Contributes to 3-Year Low in Delhi’s Air Quality
Dussehra Celebrations in October Impact Air Quality
This year’s Dussehra in Delhi witnessed a decline in air quality compared to the past two years, primarily due to the festival falling later in October. An analysis by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) revealed that the average concentration of PM2.5 in Delhi on Dussehra was 101 micrograms per cubic meter, whereas it was 89 micrograms per cubic meter in 2022 and 93 micrograms per cubic meter in 2021. In 2022, Dussehra was celebrated on October 5, while in 2021, it fell on October 15.
Firecrackers and Air Quality
Despite a comprehensive ban on firecrackers within the city, several instances of firecracker burning were reported in parts of Delhi on Dussehra. A public awareness campaign, “Patakhe Nahi Diye Jalao,” will be reintroduced to discourage firecracker use. Unfavorable meteorological conditions and emissions from firecrackers, paddy straw burning, and local pollution sources contribute to hazardous air quality levels in Delhi-NCR during the Diwali season.
Impact of Late Dussehra Date
The delayed timing of Dussehra in October, when meteorological conditions favor the accumulation of pollution, is one of the primary factors behind the decline in air quality in Delhi this year. Analysts at CREA point to this late date as a key contributor to the worsening air quality.
