Lancet Symposium on Antimicrobial Resistance — Livestream
| Turning the Tide on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)—What the World Must Do to Protect the Lifesaving Power of Antibiotics Lancet Symposium during World Health Assembly to Bring Together Global Experts on Rising Threat of Antibiotic Drug Resistance Antibiotics, the backbone of modern medicine, could become a thing of the past, threatening millions of lives, if world leaders do not prioritise action on antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Currently, 15 million deaths a year globally are linked to AMR — a toll that will only increase, absent decisive and meaningful action. Infants, elderly people, people with chronic illnesses and people requiring surgical procedures are at highest risk. Yesterday, The Lancet published a series of papers that provide crucial data, evidence and policy recommendations to serve as the cornerstone for a UN resolution in September on antimicrobial resistance. Over forty global experts from a range of disciplines, viewpoints, and geographies drafted the papers. On Tuesday, May 28, The Lancet will bring together the authors of these papers, other AMR experts, and policymakers for a symposium to address the growing burden of AMR, the need to expand antibiotic access and innovation, and the imperative for establishing global targets. |
