    LAHDC-Kargil Elections 2023: Voting is currently underway for the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC)-Kargil elections at 278 polling stations, marking a crucial day in the region’s democratic process. The campaign period concluded on Monday, setting the stage for a triangular contest across most of the 26 seats up for grabs.

    Security Measures Ensured for Fair Elections

    Shrikant Balasaheb Suse, Deputy Commissioner of Kargil, emphasized the importance of a smooth electoral process. He stated, “Today is the polling day of LAHDC elections. The mock poll process is being conducted at polling stations. We have a total of 278 polling stations. Police arrangements have been made to carry out free and fair elections. Out of the 278 stations, 114 are hyper-sensitive, and 99 are sensitive polling stations. Police deployments have been done accordingly.”

    Counting Scheduled for October 8

    The counting of votes is scheduled to take place on October 8, with the election commission aiming to establish the new council before October 11. The previous council, led by Feroz Ahmad Khan of the National Conference, completed its five-year term on October 1, paving the way for the current elections.

    Substantial Voter Turnout Expected

    The LAHDC-Kargil constituency comprises a total of 95,388 eligible voters, including 46,762 women. Voters will exercise their franchise from 8 am to 4 pm on the polling day. The fate of 85 candidates competing for 26 out of the 30 seats in the Hill Council will be determined through today’s voting process.
