The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) witnessed a significant political development on Sunday as the National Conference (NC) and Congress alliance secured an absolute majority in the 5th general elections. Here are the key highlights of this election:
NC Emerges as the Single Largest Party
In this crucial election, the National Conference emerged as the single largest party, securing a total of 11 seats. On the other hand, the Congress party secured 8 seats. This dominance solidified their position in the council as the leading coalition.
Mixed Results for Other Parties
Out of the 24 seats declared so far, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to secure only two seats, while three independent candidates celebrated victories. However, the Aam Aadmi Party faced disappointment as they failed to open their account in the LAHDC-K Council.

Prominent Winners from NC and Congress
Some of the prominent winners from the NC included Abdul Wahid, who secured victory from Bhimbhat Constituency with a narrow margin of 52 votes. Punchok Tashi also registered a win from Padum Constituency with a margin of 54 votes. Manzoor Ul Husain won from Yourbaltak Constituency with a voting margin of 90 votes. In the Congress camp, Abdul Hadi emerged victorious in Tai-Suru Constituency with a margin of 261 votes, while Abdul Samad secured a win from Ranbirpora-Drass Constituency with a margin of 575 votes.
Triangular Contest Victory for BJP
A noteworthy triumph for the BJP was witnessed as their candidate, Padma Dorjey, won a triangular contest at Stakchay Khangral Constituency with a voting margin of 177 votes. Dorjey’s victory was significant as he defeated tough competition from Syed Hassan of Congress and Ghulam Hussain of NC.
The LAHDC elections marked a crucial political event in Ladakh, especially since it was the first-ever civic election in the Kargil district since Ladakh became a separate Union territory on August 5, 2019. The BJP faced a united opposition comprising the Congress and National Conference on 26 out of the 30 council seats. A total of 85 candidates contested the polls, with the Congress and NC each fielding 22 candidates, followed by 17 from the BJP, four from the Aam Aadmi Party, and 24 Independent candidates.
