Ladakh First Ice-Hockey League Reveals 15 Teams in Spectacular Roadshow
Ladakh has officially unveiled the identities of 15 teams set to participate in its inaugural Ice Hockey League, scheduled to run from January 3 to January 13. The announcement, made through a vibrant roadshow featuring Royal Enfield riders, was inaugurated by Sonam Chosjor, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Leh. The motorcycle procession journeyed from the NDS Sports complex to the Leh main market, a central location in the city.
The teams, consisting of ten men’s and five women’s squads, received their official jerseys during the event. The establishment of this competitive league specifically targeting the civilian populace of Ladakh is anticipated to play a pivotal role in identifying and nurturing local talent, particularly from the rural areas of the region.
Preparations for the league included the organization of training and selection camps across five of Ladakh’s seven zones, namely Changthang, Leh (inclusive of Nubra and Zanskar camps), Sham, Drass, and Shakar Chiktan. A committee comprised of representatives from the Department of Youth Services & Sports (DYSS), Ice Hockey Association for Ladakh (IHAL), Ladakh Women Ice Hockey Foundation (LWIHF), zonal heads, and local Ladakhi coaches was responsible for selecting players and teams from these zonal camps.
The Ice Hockey League’s inception aims to foster a competitive environment that promotes the growth of the sport at the grassroots level. This initiative aligns with the strategic vision outlined in “The Game Changer – Blueprint for the Development of Ice Hockey in Ladakh.”
The 15 participating teams, each contributing to the league’s diversity, are named as follows: United Nubra, Sham Eagles, Sham Wolves, Shakar Chiktan Royals, Shakar Chiktan Queens, Humas Queens, Changla Lamo, Maryul Spamo Leh, Changthang Shans, Changla Blaster, Humas Warriors, Zangskar Chaddar Tamers, Purig Warriors, Maryul Spawo, and Kangs Sings Leh.
