Kerala Government Takes Governor to Supreme Court Over Unapproved Bills
The ongoing dispute between the Kerala Governor, Arif Mohammed Khan, and the state government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has escalated further. The Kerala government has taken legal action by filing a writ petition in the Supreme Court against Governor Khan for his failure to sign eight bills passed by the state Assembly.
Governor Responds to Legal Action
In response to the government’s move, Governor Khan stated that he welcomes anyone who has confusion in their mind and chooses to seek clarity through the legal process.
Allegations and Legal Action
The government’s petition alleges that Governor Khan’s inaction on these bills threatens the fundamental principles of the constitution, including the rule of law and democratic governance. Several of these bills have been pending before the Governor for more than two years. The bills encompass various aspects, including amendments to university laws, co-operative societies, and public health.
Chief Minister’s Position
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has emphasized that the Governor cannot unduly delay bills after they are passed by the state Assembly. The legal and constitutional aspects of this dispute are currently under scrutiny.
Governor’s Concerns About Updates
Governor Khan has expressed concerns about the Chief Minister’s alleged failure to provide regular updates on government activities, which he considers a constitutional duty.
This ongoing legal and political conflict highlights the complexities that can arise in the relationship between state governments and governors in India
