Kashmir Valley Stands with India Due to Jawaharlal Nehru: Digvijaya Singh

During a Rajya Sabha debate on Monday, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh criticized the government’s handling of Jammu and Kashmir, labeling it as insensitive and ignoring the will of the locals for the past four years.

Singh highlighted that the statehood was abruptly taken away and now proposed to be restored, alleging an autocratic functioning through non-local officials.

Singh attributed the credit of Kashmir’s integration with India to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Sheikh Abdullah, asserting that Nehru’s trust in Abdullah played a pivotal role.

He criticized Home Minister Amit Shah for distorting facts about J&K’s history and highlighted the region’s daily struggle with terrorism.

Regarding the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, Singh supported reservation for the displaced but questioned whether it would affect the current local reservation.

He raised concerns about unemployment among locals, alleging an autocratic rule and lack of participation for the past four years.

Singh commended the Lt Governor’s work in a challenging environment but criticized the delimitation commission for a biased approach.

He also queried the reason behind Mehbooba Mufti’s alleged house arrest, to which Home Minister Amit Shah promptly denied, assuring her freedom of movement.

However, Singh’s remarks about the Home Minister sparked a heated response from the treasury benches, leading to expungement by the Chairman.

Other participants like CPI (M)’s John Brittas and BJP’s Radha Mohan Das Agrawal highlighted varying aspects, including the reduction in terror incidents and development measures in the region.

CPI (M)’s V Sivaadasan highlighted concerns about human rights violations and the stifled voices of political leaders and activists in J&K.

The discussion in the Rajya Sabha encompassed diverse perspectives on the sensitive issue of Jammu and Kashmir’s governance and representation.
