Karnataka Government Issues Show Cause Notice to Belagavi City Corporation for Non-Compliance

The Karnataka government has served a show cause notice to the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) for its failure to adhere to government directives. The notice, issued by the Urban Development ministry on September 21, lists several reasons for the potential supersession of the civic body. The BCC has been non-compliant in contributing 70% of its funds to the total expenditure of Indira canteens, reluctance to increase property tax rates, and the appointment of 138 pourakarmiks without prior authorization. The notice questions why the local body has not followed government directives and why it should not be dismissed.

Controversy Over Contributions to Indira Canteens

Indira canteens are a flagship scheme of the Congress government aimed at providing food at a reasonable cost. However, the BCC, governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been reluctant to contribute funds to the scheme. This has led to a political dispute, with the BJP suggesting that the notice may be politically motivated to disrupt the BJP’s rule in the BCC.

    Supersession of the BCC

The BCC has faced supersession twice before, in 2005 and 2011, for various reasons. This latest notice marks the third instance of potential supersession, this time for non-linguistic reasons, leading to concerns about political influence and disputes.
