Jharkhand Government to Airlift Workers Trapped in Uttarakhand Tunnel
The Jharkhand government has announced its plan to airlift 15 workers from the state who are among the 41 trapped in the Silkyara tunnel collapse in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi. These workers hail from Giridih, Ranchi, East Singhhum, and Khunti districts of Jharkhand. Rajesh Prasad, the Joint Labour Commissioner of the Jharkhand government, stated that a team is on standby in Uttarkashi, and the workers will be airlifted to Ranchi from Dehradun once they receive medical clearance.
Progress in Rescue Operations
As rescue efforts intensify at the Silkyara tunnel site, approximately 67% of augur drilling has been completed, with horizontal piping extended up to 45 meters. Bhaskar Khulbe, former advisor to the Prime Minister’s Office and now Special Executive Officer in the Uttarakhand Tourism Department, expressed hope that the next phase of work would commence soon, following the drilling of an additional 6-meter length.
Boosting Morale of Trapped Workers
Inside the tunnel, trapped laborers Gabbar Singh Negi and Sabah Ahmed are playing a key role in maintaining the morale of fellow workers. Activities such as yoga, kirtan, and walking are being provided to ensure their well-being.
Efficient Food Distribution and Escape Routes
The second lifeline for food distribution is functioning well, providing essentials like roti, sabzi, khichdi, and fruits to the trapped workers. An escape passage of 67 meters has also been completed to facilitate the rescue team’s access.
Installation of Vertical Drilling Machine
SJVNL’s machine for constructing a vertical rescue tunnel has been installed at the site. Additionally, ONGC is mobilizing machinery from various locations for vertical boring efforts.
Collaborative Rescue Efforts
Multiple agencies, including ONGC, SJVNL, RVNL, NHIDCL, and THDCL, are collaboratively working on the rescue operation, with occasional adjustments for operational efficiency. The coordinated efforts aim to ensure the safe and timely rescue of all trapped workers.
