Following a tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of 22 people and injuries to 57 others, the Jammu and Kashmir Transport Department has suspended six officials stationed in Lakhanpur for alleged dereliction of duty. The officials are accused of permitting an overcrowded bus to enter the Union Territory.

An official order lists the suspended individuals as motor vehicle inspector Rajeev Bashin, junior assistant Sumit Mangotra, and four multi-tasking staff members: Ashwani Kumar, Keshav Singh, Aman Kumar, and Rakesh Kumar. They have been attached to the office of the Transport Commissioner pending an inquiry into their conduct.

Paramvir Singh, Additional Secretary (Technical), has been appointed to lead the investigation. The enquiry officer is tasked with submitting a detailed report on the officers’ conduct and performance within a week.

The accident occurred when a bus carrying pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh plunged into a deep gorge near Tungi Morh locality in the Chowki Chora area of Jammu’s Akhnoor region. The incident has prompted calls for increased scrutiny and accountability within the transport department to prevent future tragedies.
