Jaishankar Urges Maldives President to Show Maturity Amid Rising Tensions with India
Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu is urged to display greater maturity, according to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who made this assertion amid strained relations with the island nation. The tension escalated after three ministers criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this month. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Jaishankar acknowledged India’s influential position in the region and emphasized the importance of mature dialogue to resolve issues.
Highlighting the complexities of regional dynamics, Jaishankar stated, “In our neighborhood, different parties take different positions during elections, and being a large neighbor, we often become an issue in their elections. However, when in public office, responsibilities change, and careful consideration is needed for words and actions, whether on social media, in meetings, with the media, or elsewhere.”
Emphasizing the need for a more measured approach in governance, Jaishankar expressed the desire for mature discussions to address any concerns, stating, “Ultimately, I would like for all of us to act maturely, sit down, and talk. If they have issues, we will listen and try to resolve them because, ultimately, we are all neighbors.”
Jaishankar’s comments come in the midst of a diplomatic and political row that has spilled over into social media, impacting tourism to the Maldives. President Muizzu, elected last year with an “India Out” policy, has drawn closer to China, facing an impeachment threat over his pro-China stance. He has also ordered Indian troops and military assets to leave by March 15.
The recent controversy involves the Maldives government granting permission for a Chinese ‘research’ ship, flagged as a spy ship, to dock in the capital Male. Despite the tensions, Muizzu remains steadfast in his anti-India position, asserting independence in the face of external pressures.
Jaishankar, however, has stressed the inevitability of mutual reliance among neighbors, stating, “History and geography are very powerful forces. There is no escape from that.” As the situation unfolds, the hope remains for a diplomatic resolution through mature and constructive dialogue.
