Jaishankar Discusses Bilateral Ties and Regional Developments with Iran’s Vice President
India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, engaged in a productive meeting with Iran’s Vice President Mohammad Mokhber on the sidelines of the NAM summit in Kampala. Their discussions included recent regional developments and the enhancement of India-Iran bilateral ties. Jaishankar expressed optimism about further exchanges to advance the cooperative agenda between the two nations.
Comprehensive Review of Bilateral Engagement During Jaishankar’s Iran Visit
The meeting in Kampala follows Jaishankar’s recent two-day visit to Iran, where he held discussions with his Iranian counterpart, Dr Amir-Abdollahian, and called on Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi. The leaders comprehensively reviewed various aspects of bilateral engagement and exchanged views on pressing global and regional issues.
Missile Strikes and Regional Tensions
The discussions come against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East, triggered by missile strikes between Pakistan and Iran. Pakistan claimed to have conducted military strikes against terrorist hideouts in an Iranian province, responding to earlier strikes by Tehran in Pakistan. The situation underscores the need for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.
Multilateral Engagements at NAM Summit
During the NAM Summit, Jaishankar also met with Colombia’s Foreign Minister Alvaro Leyva Duran, discussing global issues and bilateral ties. Additionally, he engaged with Palestinian Foreign Minister Dr. Riyad al-Maliki, addressing the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The discussions emphasized India’s support for a two-state solution, reaffirming a commitment to remain in touch.
The NAM summit, bringing together 120 countries not aligned with any major power bloc, serves as a platform for diplomatic dialogue and cooperation.
