Jailed Leader’s Daughter Submits Father’s Nomination, Criticizes Lack of Support
Key Highlights:
- Sarjan Barkati’s daughter sought but did not receive support from Awami Ittehad Party.
- Sugra Barkati filed her father’s nomination papers as an independent candidate.
- The family’s participation in elections is primarily aimed at securing their parents’ release.
On September 14, Sugra Barkati, the daughter of jailed leader Sarjan Barkati, expressed her disappointment in receiving no assistance from the Er Rashid-led Awami Ittehad Party while attempting to submit her father’s nomination papers for the Langate constituency.
Despite seeking the party’s support, Sugra reported that they did not even receive a phone call, leaving her frustrated by the lack of response.
Speaking in Beerwah Main Town, Sugra thanked the residents of the Beerwah Assembly Constituency for their overwhelming support, as she submitted her father’s nomination as an independent candidate.
She emphasized that the primary reason for their participation in the upcoming elections is the release of her parents, stating, “If the government releases my parents, we will refrain from contesting the assembly elections.”
Sugra added that her family had initially hoped for backing from Er Rashid’s party but were left disappointed when their request for assistance went unanswered. The expectation had been that the Awami Ittehad Party would show solidarity with their cause, but this did not materialize.
Despite the challenges, Sugra mentioned that she has been in communication with various other political leaders, some of whom have assured her of their full support during the election campaign.
Her focus remains firmly on the release of her father, with the elections serving as a means to achieve that goal.
