Italy’s Culture Minister Supports Israel’s Inclusion in Biennale Amid Controversy
Despite widespread opposition from thousands of artists, curators, and critics who signed an open letter urging the exclusion of the Israeli national pavilion from this year’s Venice Biennale, Italy’s Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano firmly backs Israel’s participation.
Sangiuliano emphasizes Israel’s right and duty to showcase its art, especially in the aftermath of attacks on its people in Gaza by ruthless terrorists.
The open letter, presented by the “Art Not Genocide Alliance,” draws attention to the Biennale’s past actions, such as banning South Africa’s participation during the apartheid era and supporting Ukraine post the 2022 Russian invasion.
It criticizes the Biennale’s perceived silence on Israel’s actions against Palestinians, citing a troubling double standard that has left them appalled.
