Iran Tightens Hormuz Curbs as US Blockade Stalls Ceasefire Talks
New Delhi, Apr 19 (VoM News): Iran has hardened its position on maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz, warning that access will remain restricted as long as the United States maintains its blockade of Iranian ports.
Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran would not allow other countries unrestricted passage while its own shipping is curtailed, calling the US move a “miscalculation” despite reiterating Iran’s willingness to pursue peace.
The escalation comes as mediation efforts—led by Pakistan—continue to seek an extension of a fragile ceasefire set to expire midweek. Negotiations remain inconclusive, with both sides divided over key issues including Iran’s nuclear programme and maritime access.
Tensions have surged again after Donald Trump said the blockade would stay in place until a broader agreement is reached. Iran had earlier signalled a reopening of the strait following a truce linked to the Hezbollah-Israel conflict, but quickly reversed course.
Shipping activity has slowed significantly, with vessels reluctant to transit the critical route that handles nearly one-fifth of global oil trade, fuelling concerns over supply disruptions and price volatility.
The situation has been further complicated by recent security incidents, including reported firing by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps units on two India-flagged vessels, prompting India to summon Iran’s ambassador.
Tehran has also rejected proposals to transfer its enriched uranium stockpile abroad, describing such demands as unacceptable. Officials said while new US proposals are under review, Iran is not yet ready for another round of direct negotiations.
The conflict, triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February, has already caused significant casualties across the region. With the ceasefire under strain, the dispute over the Strait of Hormuz threatens to derail diplomatic efforts and risk a broader escalation.
