India’s G20 Presidency: A Leap Toward Global Unity and Sustainable Development

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has marked an extraordinary tenure as the G20 president, revitalizing multilateralism, giving voice to the Global South, and prioritizing sustainable development and women’s empowerment. As Brazil prepares to assume the presidency from December 1, Modi reflects on India’s achievements, confident that the initiatives for people, planet, peace, and prosperity will have a lasting impact.

Navigating Global Challenges with Inclusive Policies

During India’s G20 presidency, the world faced multifaceted challenges including COVID-19 recovery, climate threats, financial instability, and waning multilateralism. Modi emphasized the philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ – guiding India’s approach to these global issues. By shifting from GDP-centric to human-centric progress, India focused on uniting nations through shared values and aspirations. This approach led to the first-of-its-kind ‘Voice of the Global South Summit’, mainstreaming the concerns of developing nations in global discussions.

Advancing Sustainable Development and Technological Collaboration

A key achievement of India’s G20 presidency was the 2023 Action Plan for Accelerating Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This plan took an action-oriented approach to health, education, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. Additionally, the Digital Public Infrastructure Repository, a milestone in technological collaboration, will empower the Global South with over 50 digital public infrastructures from 16 countries.

Commitment to Climate Justice and Gender Equality

India’s leadership emphasized climate justice, advocating for financial and technological support from the Global North. The G20 acknowledged the need for USD 5.9 trillion by developing countries to meet their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by 2030. India also spearheaded efforts in gender equality, culminating in the formation of a dedicated Working Group on Women’s Empowerment and introducing the Women’s Reservation Bill 2023.

Addressing Geopolitical Issues and Terrorism

India led discussions on critical geopolitical issues, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and advocating for humanitarianism over hostility. Modi stressed that the current era should not be one of war but of cooperation and peace.

India’s G20 presidency highlighted its role as a leader in global governance, championing inclusive growth and sustainable development. As the baton passes to Brazil, India’s initiatives promise to resonate and shape global policies in the coming years.
