India’s Defense Sector Leaps Forward with Domestic Production of Combat Aircraft Engines

In a major development for India’s defense capabilities, DRDO Chief Dr. Samir V. Kamat announced that the engines for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mark 2 and the first two squadrons of the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) will be produced domestically. This initiative is a collaboration between American GE and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), made possible after receiving all necessary clearances from the United States. The engines will be manufactured in a joint facility in India, marking a significant step in the country’s self-reliance in defense technology.

LCA Mark 2 and AMCA: Pioneering Indigenous Defense Projects

The Cabinet Committee on Security has recently approved the development of the LCA Mark 2 fighter aircraft, intended to replace aging Mirage 2000, Jaguar, and MiG-29 combat aircraft in the Indian Air Force (IAF). Aeronautical Development Agency Chief Girish Deodhare elaborated on the project, stating that it involves the development of an advanced 17.5-tonne single-engine aircraft, with the first prototype expected to roll out within a year. The project, slated for completion by 2027, includes extensive flying trials and other related work.

Rafale-Class Avionics with a Lighter Framework

The LCA Mark 2 is anticipated to match the Rafale class aircraft in terms of avionics and capabilities but will be lighter in weight. The DRDO plans to equip the aircraft with a GE-414 engine, an advanced version of the GE-404 engines that currently power the existing LCAs and the 83 LCA Mark 1As soon to be inducted into the IAF. Currently, the IAF operates 30 LCAs, with two additional units utilized by HAL for the development of Mark 1As.

Focus on Indigenization and Future Developments

The government has emphasized the need for ‘Made in India’ engines post the initial development phase, highlighting a strategic shift towards indigenization in defense manufacturing. The proposal for the AMCA aircraft development, infused with significant indigenous input, is also under consideration by the government and expected to receive approval soon. This approach aligns with India’s broader objective of enhancing its defense autonomy and technological prowess.
