Indian Speedster Mohammed Shami Makes History With Double Five-Wicket Haul in World Cup
Mohammed Shami has etched his name in cricket history as the first Indian to achieve two five-wicket hauls in the ODI World Cup. This remarkable feat was accomplished during India’s match against New Zealand, where Shami’s stellar performance helped restrict the Kiwis to a total of 273 runs. In the process, he became a standout among prominent Indian bowlers such as Kapil Dev, Venkatesh Prasad, Robin Singh, Ashish Nehra, and Yuvraj Singh, all of whom have secured one five-wicket haul in the World Cup.
Australian Mitchell Starc Holds Record for Most Five-Wicket Hauls
In the context of the ODI World Cup, Australian bowler Mitchell Starc holds the record for the most five-wicket hauls, with three to his name. Apart from Starc, no other bowler has achieved more than two five-wicket hauls in the history of the tournament. Mohammed Shami has made his presence known in the ODI World Cup since his debut in the 2015 edition, accumulating an impressive tally of 36 wickets. His best figures in this prestigious competition are 5/54.
India vs. New Zealand Match Overview
In the match, India took on New Zealand and chose to field first. The Indian team began on a strong note, reducing the Kiwis to 19/2 within the powerplay. However, a resilient partnership of 159 runs between Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra (who scored 75 off 87 balls, including six fours and a six) allowed New Zealand to stage a comeback. India, however, made a resurgence in the later stages of the game, dismissing New Zealand for a total of 273 runs in 50 overs. Mohammed Shami was the standout bowler, finishing with figures of 5/54, while Kuldeep Yadav (2/73) also contributed effectively. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj took one wicket each.
With this victory, India needs to chase 274 runs to secure their fifth consecutive win.
