Indian Officials Urged Apple to Soften iPhone Hacking Warnings
According to the Washington Post, the Indian government purportedly pressured Apple to mitigate its alerts regarding potential hacking attempts on iPhones, directed at several Opposition figures and journalists.
The warnings about ‘state-sponsored attackers’ on their iPhones reportedly prompted swift action from the Narendra Modi administration, demanding Apple to soften the impact of these alerts, as per three unidentified sources cited by the newspaper.
Government officials allegedly pushed Apple to downplay the political ramifications of the warnings, even calling for alternative explanations to be provided to the users, as disclosed in the report.
A meeting with an Apple security expert was convened in New Delhi to pursue this agenda, despite the visiting official standing firm on the company’s stance.
Following the October 31 alerts, Opposition leaders from the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) and journalists claimed receipt of emails from Apple, cautioning them about potential remote attempts to compromise their iPhones associated with their Apple IDs.
Some shared these notifications on social media, quoting Apple’s assertion about the alleged targeting by state-sponsored attackers.
Apple clarified that it did not attribute the threat notifications to any specific state-sponsored attacker, emphasizing the complexity in detecting such sophisticated attacks due to evolving methods and incomplete threat intelligence signals.
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed concern over the alerts but denied the Opposition’s accusations of government involvement in compromising their phones.
He assured a press conference of an ongoing investigation into the matter. Vaishnaw later shared on social media that Apple’s information on the issue seemed ambiguous and non-specific.
The ongoing situation raises questions about the nature of the hacking attempts, the responses from Apple and the Indian government, and the underlying complexities of cybersecurity.
