MUMBAI, October 12, 2026 [VoM News]: Adding the feathers to the capabilities, and detect the threats, the Indian Navy on Monday commissioned INS Mangrol, which is its third Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC).
Its located at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, strengthening its capabilities to detect and counter underwater threats in coastal waters.
It has been built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi. The warship was inducted during a ceremony presided over by Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command.
INS Mangrol is the third of eight anti-submarine warfare shallow water crafts being constructed by CSL as part of India’s indigenous naval shipbuilding programme.
Displacing approximately 900 tonnes, the vessel features waterjet propulsion, modern underwater surveillance systems and advanced anti-submarine weapons.
Its equipment includes the Abhay Hull-Mounted Sonar, lightweight torpedoes, an indigenous anti-submarine rocket launcher and the Maareech Advanced Torpedo Decoy System.
As it is powered by three diesel engines, the warship is designed for high manoeuvrability in shallow coastal waters, where larger naval vessels face operational limitations.
Whereas, it can undertake anti-submarine warfare, underwater surveillance, mine warfare and low-intensity maritime operations.
As per Navy, the vessel incorporates more than 80 per cent indigenous content, reflecting India’s expanding domestic warship manufacturing capabilities.
Named after Mangrol, a coastal town in Gujarat, the ship also carries forward the legacy of the former INS Mangrol (M85), a minesweeper decommissioned in April 2004.
