Indian Mujahideen Operative Sentenced to 10 Years in Terror Conspiracy Case
A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court has sentenced an operative of the banned Indian Mujahideen to 10 years of imprisonment in connection with a 2012 terror conspiracy case. Syed Maqbool was convicted under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and his sentence was pronounced on Thursday. He becomes the fifth person among a total of 11 accused to be sentenced in this case.
Accused Ties to Indian Mujahideen
Syed Maqbool, a resident of Nanded in Maharashtra, was arrested in 2013 for his active involvement with members of the Indian Mujahideen in India and Pakistan and his participation in the crime and conspiracy. He maintained close ties with key figures of the Indian Mujahideen, including Riyaz Bhatkal based in Pakistan and Imran Khan and Obaid-Ur-Rehman located in India.
Conspiracy to Carry Out Attacks
These operatives conspired to carry out attacks in various locations within India, with a focus on Hyderabad. They conducted extensive reconnaissance of important sites, including those in Hyderabad. The case, registered in 2012, is related to the conspiracy planned by members of the Indian Mujahideen, a group responsible for orchestrating a series of devastating bombings across India between 2006 and 2013.

The acts of terror orchestrated by the Indian Mujahideen include various attacks such as the Varanasi blasts in 2006, the Mumbai serial blasts in 2006, the UP courts serial blasts in Varanasi, Faizabad, and Lucknow in 2007, the Hyderabad twin blasts in 2007, the Jaipur serial blasts, the Delhi serial blasts, the Ahmedabad serial blasts in 2008, the Chinnaswamy Stadium blast in Bangalore in 2010, and the Hyderabad twin blasts in 2013.
Ongoing Trial for Remaining Accused
The trial for the remaining six accused in this case, who face a range of charges under the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, is ongoing. This case represents another step in India’s efforts to bring those involved in acts of terrorism to justice.
