In the midst of the ongoing conflict between Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas fighters from Gaza, a doctor of Indian origin found himself at the center of controversy. Dr. Sunil Rao was terminated from his position at the Royal Hospital Bahrain due to ‘Anti-Palestine’ comments he posted on social media.

Controversial Social Media Posts Lead to Termination

The hospital administration took to the microblogging site X to announce the termination of Dr. Sunil Rao’s employment. The decision was made in light of the tweets he had posted, which were perceived as favoring Israel, the nation engaged in relentless airstrikes on Gaza in retaliation for the Hamas attack that occurred over the weekend of October 7.

Social Media Alert and Swift Action

A concerned user of the micro-blogging site flagged Dr. Rao’s controversial tweet, prompting Bahraini authorities to take notice. In response, the Royal Hospital Bahrain acted swiftly and announced the termination of Dr. Rao’s contract. The hospital’s statement clarified that Dr. Sunil Rao had posted tweets on social media that were deemed offensive to Bahraini society.

The statement emphasized that Dr. Rao’s tweets and personal ideology did not reflect the opinion and values of the hospital. His actions were deemed a violation of the hospital’s code of conduct, leading to the necessary legal actions, which resulted in the immediate termination of his employment.

    Apology and Consequences

In response to the controversy, Dr. Rao issued an apology on social media, acknowledging the insensitivity of his previous statements. He expressed regret for the statement he had posted, acknowledging that it was inappropriate, especially given the context of the ongoing conflict. Dr. Rao emphasized his respect for the country, its people, and its religion, where he had lived and worked for the past 10 years.

The Royal Hospital Bahrain not only terminated Dr. Rao’s employment but also deleted his profile from their hospital website. Dr. Sunil Rao, an alumnus of Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam, and Kasturba Medical College in Mangaluru, Karnataka, with 20 years of experience, now faces the consequences of his controversial social media activity.

Escalation of Regional Conflict Amid Middle East Tensions

This incident occurs in the midst of heightened tensions in the Middle East due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. While the UAE and Bahrain have been strengthening their ties with Israel, the escalation of violence could potentially strain these diplomatic relations. Moreover, Saudi Arabia and other Arab states have voiced concerns about the consequences of Israel’s Palestinian policies. They have emphasized the importance of allowing significant aid to enter Gaza, and regional discussions are ongoing to address these pressing issues.
