India to Boost Naval Capabilities with New Aircraft Carrier
India is set to significantly enhance its naval strength with the addition of a new aircraft carrier worth nearly 400 billion rupees ($4.8 billion). This move is seen as a strategic effort to counterbalance China’s expanding naval presence in the Indian Ocean region. The Defense Acquisition Council, led by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, is expected to approve the acquisition of this second indigenous carrier soon, according to sources familiar with the development.
Enhanced Naval Power with Advanced Carrier
The upcoming carrier, designed to accommodate at least 28 fighter jets and helicopters, will have a displacement of 45,000 tons. It is planned to be equipped with French Rafale jets. This addition follows the induction of India’s first domestically built carrier, INS Vikrant, and complements the existing Russia-made aircraft carrier in the fleet.
Strategic Naval Presence in the Indian Ocean
With a three-carrier battle group, the Indian Navy aims to demonstrate its power in the Indian Ocean, countering the presence of China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy, which currently holds the title of the world’s largest navy. The expanded Indian fleet is expected to enable India to maintain a continuous presence in strategically important and distant maritime locations.
Military Expansion Amid Global Naval Rivalry
The Indian Ocean has become a focal point of intense naval competition, witnessing the highest level of militarization since World War II. India’s plan to grow its naval fleet to 160 ships by 2030 and 175 by 2035, with a budget of 2 trillion rupees, is part of a broader strategy to match up to the naval capabilities of global powers like China and the United States. Currently, over 60 Indian Navy vessels are under construction.
Enhanced Maritime Surveillance and Infrastructure
India has also upgraded its runway facilities in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, allowing for night-time aircraft landings. This upgrade is geared towards improving surveillance over key maritime routes like the Malacca, Sunda, and Lombok straits in the southern Indian Ocean. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands play a crucial role in maritime surveillance, used by India and its allies for monitoring naval activities in the region.
