
400 Killed in Pakistan Airstrike on Kabul Hospital, Deadliest Attack in Afghanistan’s History
A devastating airstrike on a hospital in Kabul has left at least 400 people dead and hundreds injured, according to officials in Afghanistan, marking one of the deadliest incidents in the country in recent years.
The strike, which occurred late Monday evening, reportedly hit a large drug rehabilitation facility where nearly 2,000 patients were undergoing treatment. Afghan authorities, including representatives of the Taliban administration, said the attack caused extensive destruction to the hospital and resulted in a high number of civilian casualties.
Afghanistan has accused Pakistan of carrying out the airstrike. A spokesperson stated that the facility was a civilian medical center and condemned the attack as a violation of international norms protecting hospitals and non-combatants.
Pakistan, however, has denied targeting the hospital. Officials maintained that the military operation was aimed at what they described as “terrorist infrastructure” and claimed that the strikes were conducted with precision to avoid civilian harm. The conflicting accounts have heightened tensions between the two neighboring countries.
International concern has grown following the incident. Richard Bennett of the United Nations expressed alarm over reports of civilian casualties and called for restraint. He urged all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, emphasizing the need to protect civilians and medical facilities during conflict.
Prominent Afghan figures also reacted to the attack. Cricketers such as Mohammad Nabi and Naveen-ul-Haq voiced their grief and condemnation on social media, highlighting the loss of innocent lives in a place intended for healing.
The airstrike comes amid escalating cross-border tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, with both sides accusing each other of supporting militant activities. Recent weeks have seen repeated clashes and military actions, raising fears of further escalation in the region.
As rescue operations continue at the site, the full extent of the damage and loss remains unclear. Calls are mounting from the international community for an independent investigation into the incident and for immediate steps to prevent further civilian harm.
