India has significantly improved its position in the list of overseas traveler source markets to the United States, according to the US Department of Commerce’s Q2 2023 report. India has climbed to the second position (excluding Mexico and Canada), up from the third rank in the previous four quarters and eighth position in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic. This progress is noteworthy, even with a substantial backlog of tourist visas, indicating strong pent-up demand.

Anticipated Top Traveler Market

Experts predict that India is poised to become the top traveler market to the United States, with vacations or holidays as the primary purpose of the trip. Other reasons for travel include visits to friends and family, as well as business trips.

Growing Visitor Numbers

The data coincides with Indians being the second-largest group of visitors (after the UK) to the US during the peak travel month of June this year. This increase in travel is occurring despite prolonged visa processing backlogs and soaring airfares. According to the US Department of Commerce, over 150,000 Indians visited the US as of September this year.

Visa Processing Backlog and Efforts to Expedite

The American Embassy in India has assured that they are actively working to reduce visa processing times and gradually clear the backlog. Presently, the processing time for a tourist visa to the United States varies by city, with waiting periods as high as 607 days in Kolkata and 441 days in Hyderabad.

To expedite backlog clearance and reduce visa processing times, Indians have been given the option to apply for US tourist visas from the consulates of other countries. Visa authorities are also addressing technical issues on their end, which can create delays in processes like appointment scheduling and interviews. This improvement in India’s ranking as a traveler source market to the United States reflects the strong interest and demand for travel, even in the face of logistical challenges.
