India Initiates High-Level Inquiry into Alleged Assassination Plot
India has established a high-level committee to investigate claims of a conspiracy to assassinate Sikh extremist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on U.S. soil. The Financial Times reported that U.S. authorities foiled the assassination plot and warned the Indian government about its alleged involvement. The External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, confirmed the formation of the committee on November 18 to thoroughly examine all aspects of the case.
Background of the Alleged Plot and India’s Response
Pannun, identified as a Sikh extremist and holding American and Canadian citizenship, is sought by Indian authorities on various terrorism-related charges. According to Bagchi, the U.S. had previously shared information with India about a connection between organized criminals, gun runners, and terrorists. The Indian government takes such information seriously, considering it pertains to national security. Bagchi emphasized India’s commitment to addressing any issues impacting national security, leading to the formation of the inquiry committee.
Follow-up Actions and International Implications
The committee’s findings will guide India’s subsequent actions. This inquiry follows allegations by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding the potential involvement of Indian agents in the June killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Vancouver. The U.S. and India have expressed concerns about the nexus of criminal and terrorist activities, agreeing on the need for follow-up actions based on shared intelligence inputs.
