Gambhir leads from the front: The defending champions India Capitals showed their mettle as they defeated the Gujarat Giants by 12 runs in a nail-biting Eliminator of the Legends League Cricket (LLC) Season 2. The India Capitals posted a massive total of 223 for 7 in 20 overs, thanks to a brilliant knock of 51 from 30 balls by their captain Gautam Gambhir. He was well supported by Kirk Edwards (26), Kevin Pietersen (26), Ben Dunk (30) and Bharat Chipli (35), who all played quick-fire innings to keep the scoreboard ticking. Rajat Bhatia was the most economical bowler for the Giants, taking 2 wickets for 37 runs in his four overs.

    Gayle and O’Brien fight back

The Giants did not give up easily and chased the target with gusto. They kept up with the required run rate and even accelerated further after the 11th over. Chris Gayle was the mainstay of their innings, smashing 84 runs off 55 balls with nine fours and four sixes. He shared a 115-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Kevin O’Brien, who also scored a half-century (57 off 33 balls) with seven fours and two sixes. The pair threatened to take the game away from the India Capitals, but their dismissals in successive overs turned the tide in favour of the defending champions.

Udana and Theron seal the deal

The 19th over of the Giants’ innings proved to be the game-changer, as Isuru Udana bowled a superb over, giving away only two runs and taking the crucial wicket of Gayle. He was ably assisted by Rusty Theron, who defended 21 runs in the final over and picked up two wickets as well. The Giants could only manage 211 for 7 in 20 overs, falling short by 12 runs. Udana was declared the Player of the Match for his outstanding spell of 2 for 22 in four overs. The India Capitals will now face the Manipal Tigers in the Qualifier 2 on December 7, 2023, for a spot in the final.
