The Indian and Australian armed forces are currently engaged in the second edition of the joint military exercise, AustraHind 2023, taking place in Perth, Western Australia. This exercise, running from November 22 to December 6, focuses on tactical exercises in multi-domain operations in urban and semi-urban terrains.
Composition of the Contingents
- Indian Armed Forces: The Indian contingent includes 81 personnel, with 60 from a battalion of the Gorkha Rifles, one officer from the Indian Navy, and 20 from the Indian Air Force.
- Australian Armed Forces: The Australian contingent comprises 60 personnel from the 13th Brigade, along with 20 each from the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force.
Objectives and Activities of the Exercise
- Collaborative Partnership and Best Practices: The aim is to foster collaboration and share best practices between India and Australia.
- Interoperability in Multi-domain Operations: The exercise promotes interoperability in multi-domain operations, particularly in urban and semi-urban settings, underlining the framework of Chapter VII of the United Nations on peacekeeping operations.
- Exchange of Ideas and Joint Rehearsals: The joint exercise includes exchange of ideas, sniper firing, and jointly operating surveillance and communication equipment for tactical operations and situational awareness.
Significance and Future Plans
- Strengthening Defence Cooperation: This exercise is significant for promoting understanding between the two militaries and furthering defence cooperation between India and Australia.
- Annual Event: Instituted in 2022, with the first edition held in Mahajan, Rajasthan, Exercise AustraHind is planned as an annual event, to be conducted alternately in India and Australia.
