India and Maldives Discuss Withdrawal of Indian Military Personnel
Officials from the Indian High Commission in the Maldives have reportedly met with officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Male, Maldives.
These discussions are said to be part of high-level talks between Maldives and India regarding the withdrawal of Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives.
While the Ministry of External Affairs has not issued an official statement, it is reported that the talks also involve expediting India-backed development projects in the Maldives.
The withdrawal of Indian troops was a key campaign promise of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s party. Presently, there are around 70 Indian troops stationed in the Maldives, along with aircraft and helicopters.
The talks come after a diplomatic row over disparaging remarks made by some Maldivian officials against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep.
Muizzu had previously claimed an agreement had been reached with the Indian government to withdraw military personnel.
