Increased Surveillance with Long-Range Radar Systems
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has seen a significant surge in its role along the Eastern Ladakh border with China, according to Air Commodore D S Handa, the Air Officer Commanding of Leh-based Air Force Station. During an airshow commemorating the 91st anniversary of the IAF, Air Commodore Handa revealed the evolving responsibilities of the IAF in the region. One of the key developments on the horizon is the acquisition of long-range surveillance radar systems, aimed at enhancing the force’s ability to monitor potential threats.
Showcasing Strength: Airshow Highlights IAF’s Commitment
The airshow, held at the Leh-based Air Force Station, had Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Brig B D Mishra as the chief guest. It featured a static display of various aircraft and missile systems, including Rafale aircraft, Cheetal helicopters, the indigenous Akash Missile System, and Medium-Range Surface to Air Missile. The primary objective of the airshow was to inspire young students to consider a career in the IAF while reassuring the people of Ladakh about the force’s readiness to protect the region and the nation.

Enhanced Surveillance and Forward Deployments
Air Commodore Handa emphasized the heightened role of the IAF in Eastern Ladakh, where they have strategically installed radars to bolster surveillance capabilities. The acquisition of long-range surveillance radar systems is part of their ongoing efforts to maintain a vigilant watch over potential threats in the area. Moreover, weapon systems and radars have been strategically deployed in forward areas to promptly detect and respond to any enemy activity.
IAF: Lifeline of Ladakh
The IAF plays a crucial role in Ladakh by ensuring the timely delivery of essential supplies such as ration, ammunition, and other provisions to the troops stationed in the forward areas. This vital support underscores the IAF’s significance in the region’s security and stability.
Inspiring Future Generations and Showcasing Aerospace Advancements
Lt. Governor Mishra expressed his delight at the maiden airshow, noting that it provided local youths with a firsthand look at the IAF’s capabilities. He praised the IAF’s ability to defend the airfield and the city while highlighting India’s achievement in manufacturing fifth-generation aircraft, a capability only a few countries possess.
The airshow offered students and the general public an opportunity to observe displayed aircraft and missile systems while receiving briefings on their strengths and capabilities.
The successful execution of the event, a testament to the collaboration between the Air Force Station and Civil Administration, not only motivated young individuals to consider joining the IAF but also showcased the remarkable advancements in India’s aerospace power.
