Himachal Pradesh’s Cry for Help: Chief Minister Seeks National Disaster Status.
Demand for National Disaster Declaration
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu has made an urgent plea to the Union government, calling for the devastating situation in the state to be declared a national disaster. This plea was earnestly presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the recent G20 dinner, where Chief Minister Sukhu also requested a special relief package for the state. Despite continuous appeals from the state government, both demands have regrettably gone unanswered.
Commitment to the People
Chief Minister Sukhu remains steadfast in his commitment to the people of Himachal Pradesh. He has vowed to provide comprehensive answers to all queries posed by the opposition in the forthcoming monsoon session of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly. Additionally, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to Priyanka Gandhi for her compassionate visit to the state, where she took time out from her busy schedule to meet the disaster-affected residents. Her empathetic response to the dire situation touched many, as her eyes welled with tears after encountering the affected people in various locations.
Unprecedented Devastation and Relief Efforts
The state has borne the brunt of unprecedented devastation due to heavy rains and floods. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the government is actively amending policies and manuals to expedite relief efforts for those affected. One notable measure is the provision of monthly house rent support to individuals who have lost their homes, offering ₹5,000 in rural areas and ₹10,000 in urban areas until March 31, 2024.
Moreover, many have lost their land to the disaster, making their existing land holdings unsuitable for habitation. The government is now reevaluating regulations to ensure that those affected receive the assistance they require. Chief Minister Sukhu has further directed all District Deputy Commissioners to ensure that relief reaches every disaster-affected individual.
Challenges Beyond Natural Disasters
Amidst these challenges, Chief Minister Sukhu also highlighted concerns about the potential negative impact on Himachal Pradesh’s apple orchard owners due to reduced import duty on Washington Apples. He assured that the state government is prepared to allocate land and modify regulations to facilitate aid through disaster manuals. In a holistic approach, he emphasized that farmers who have lost livestock and crops will receive support, with all Deputy Commissioners mandated to declare disaster-affected areas.
