Experts at DaddySkins conducted a study to rank the European countries with the most successful eSports industries. Key factors such as total earnings, world ranking and number of Esport players were taken into consideration to compile the list. The study also provides the top-3 games which brought the most earnings to the country in eSports.
Denmark has the most successful eSports industry among European countries with 56.6M dollars total earnings. Compared to other European countries, Denmark has a smaller number of eSports players, a little over 2K, so Denmark’s players are more successful and earn more in eSports on average.
Sweden follows closely with the second place with 52.2M dollars total earnings. It has over 3000 eSports players, participating in the competitions, and they earn the most in Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) and Fortnite.
France holds the third place in the ranking of the most successful eSports industries in Europe, being very close to Sweden and Denmark with 51M dollars in earnings. Additionally, France has more than 5000 eSports players, almost twice the number of players from Sweden.
Germany is fourth in this list with 45.6M dollars in earnings. Out of all the countries in this ranking, Germany has the most eSport players, 6123 in total. Dota 2, a multiplayer online battle arena video game, brings the biggest profit to German eSport players.
Finland holds the fifth place with 31.6M dollars earnings, significantly falling behind Germany. A little over 2000 players represent Finland in eSports, with Dota 2 and CS:GO bringing the most earnings to the country. Additionally, PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS, is the third most popular game in Finland’s eSports, which is not as popular in all the previous countries on this list. Similar to Fortnite, PUGB: BATTLEGROUNDS is a battle royale game where 100 players compete against each other to become the only winner.
Poland ranks sixth in the list of European countries with the most successful eSports industries with 26M dollars in earnings and over 2500 players. The most popular eSports game in Poland is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive which is a tactical first-person shooter game.
The Netherlands take the seventh place with 16M dollars total, earning 10M dollars less than Poland. The Netherlands also have less than 2000 eSports players. The most popular eSports games in the country are Fortnite, Dota 2 and Rocket League. Unlike other games, Rocket League is vehicular soccer video game, where the players control rocket-powered vehicles and try to hit the ball into their opponent’s goal.
Norway holds the eighth place in the ranking of the European countries with the most successful eSports industries with 12.4M dollars in total earnings. Norway has a little over 1000 eSports players which earn the most in Fortnite, CS:GO and PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS.
Spain, closely following Norway with 12.3M dollars in earnings, ranks ninth. Spain has twice as many eSports players as Norway for a total of 2479 players. The most popular eSports game in Spain is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive but the second place belongs to League of Legends, a team-based multiplayer online battle arena video game which is not as popular in other countries on this list.
Bulgaria closes the top of the European countries with the most successful eSports industries with the tenth place and 9.7M dollars in earnings. Compared to other countries on this list, Bulgaria has the lowest amount of eSports players for a total of 407 people but it still earns its place within the top-10. Similar to Spain, League of Legends is also a popular eSport game in Bulgaria, in addition to Dota 2 and CS:GO.
A spokesperson from DaddySkinshighlights the fast development of the eSports industry. “Together with the video games industry, eSports engages more and more players. Each year I see new teams, competitions and record profits for eSports. It’s a trend that points to the importance of all kinds of digital entertainment which brings money and new innovations to countries that invest in it.”
Methodology: To determine the countries with the most successful eSports industries, experts analyzed the eSports earning by each country and the amount of eSports players. They focused on gathering quantifiable data and made the ranking based on total tournament earnings.
