Guwahati: Drugs worth Rs 40 crore seized from truck by Assam Police, 2 held

Guwahati: Assam Police have seized suspected narcotics valued at Rs 40 crore from a truck that was caught near the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Garchuk area of Guwahati on Wednesday night. Two persons were arrested in connection with the case, police sources have informed.

Special police teams launched an operation following the receipt of specific information that a truck carrying a large amount of drugs from Manipur was passing through the state and was on its way to some other destination in the country. The teams then took to tracking the truck. They managed to catch up with the truck near the ISBT after a short chase.

The vehicle was later searched but seemed to contain nothing.

On checking more closely, the officials detected a hidden chamber built within the truck. After searching this hidden chamber, 1.5 lakh pieces of suspect narcotics, 15 packages, and some soap cases containing suspect heroin were found.

Those who were in the truck areAbdul Qadir and Sariful Islam, inhabitants of Goalpara district of Assam. They have been taken into custody and an investigation is underway by registering the case under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The interrogators have expressed hopes that the investigation into this case will reveal important facts about the mode of transport used by drug smugglers to smuggle drugs from Manipur to other parts of the country via Assam. The seized narcotics would be sent for forensic analysis to find out their type.
