Gulmarg Glows with Winter Magic: 10,000 Tourists Flock for Christmas Festivities and Economic Boost
In a jubilant display, Gulmarg, the famed ski resort, embraced the enchanting allure of winter, drawing approximately 10,000 tourists on Christmas Eve. The immaculate snow-covered landscape resonated with exuberant celebrations as locals, as well as domestic and international visitors, immersed themselves in the festive atmosphere. The snowfall not only enhanced the scenic beauty but also contributed to the economic vibrancy of Gulmarg. Javeed Ahmed, the Assistant Director of Tourism in Gulmarg, reported that the destination welcomed over 10,000 tourists on Christmas Eve, with a noteworthy influx of foreign visitors.
Javeed expressed optimism regarding an upswing in foreign arrivals as winter activities unfolded. On Sunday, Gulmarg recorded 4,912 visitors, followed by 4,828 on Monday, signaling a robust start to the season. Ahmed remarked, “With a total of 16,000 tourist arrivals so far, we anticipate a substantial increase in footfall, gearing up for a successful season.” Anticipating a rise in the average daily influx of 5,000 tourists, Gulmarg is poised for a bustling New Year, according to the Assistant Director of Tourism.
Despite the heightened demand, the hospitality sector, including hotels and guesthouses, is efficiently accommodating the surge, showcasing Gulmarg’s capacity to host a large number of tourists, officials affirmed.
During a Christmas celebration at Gulmarg, Director of Tourism Raja Yaqoob spoke to reporters, highlighting the department’s preparations for the New Year and expressing joy at witnessing predominantly foreign tourists exploring the valley. Yaqoob stated, “While Pahalgam is nearing full capacity, Sonamarg, opening for winter tourism for the first time, is also witnessing a rise in tourist arrivals.” He added that this positive news was shared during the Christmas celebration at Gulmarg.
Director Tourism also noted that mostly foreign tourists were visiting the valley this time, marking a joyous moment for all. As part of the festive celebrations, Saint Mary’s Church hosted a joyful event led by Father Eric and Father Venoo. Community members gathered to offer prayers in accordance with their religious traditions, and a ceremonial cake-cutting added to the festive spirit, attended by officials and stakeholders alike.
