A 27-year-old Google engineer in California, Liren Chen, has been charged with murder after allegedly beating his wife, identified as Xuanyi Yu, to death. Chen was found covered in blood at their home, and his wife’s body showed severe blunt force injuries to her head. Google confirmed that both Chen and Xuanyi Yu were employees at the tech giant at the time of the incident. Chen has been charged with murder and is currently in the hospital, facing prison if convicted. Police received a call from an acquaintance reporting Chen’s unresponsiveness, leading to the discovery of the crime scene.

Incident Details and Police Response

Chen was discovered “spattered with blood,” and his right hand was extremely swollen and purple. Police found scratches on his arm and blood on his clothing, legs, arms, and hands. An acquaintance had called the police after Chen failed to answer calls or the door. Upon arrival, officers found Chen motionless on his knees with hands in the air. The officers entered the house and took Chen into custody, discovering his wife’s body in the bedroom.

Google Employment and Profiles

Liren Chen, a Google software engineer since March 2020, has been working on a YouTube Shorts recommendation algorithm. Xuanyi Yu, who joined Google as a software engineer in 2021, previously worked at Amazon. Both are alumni of a Beijing university, according to their LinkedIn profiles. Chen is currently hospitalized, preventing his immediate court appearance.
