GN Azad Calls for Local Involvement in Combating Attacks; Indian Army Probes Civilian Deaths in Rajouri Encounter
Following the tragic deaths of three civilians during an encounter in Rajouri, Ghulam Nabi Azad, President of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), emphasized the necessity of involving local inhabitants to gather information in areas affected by attacks. Azad stressed that while the armed forces are vigilant, both central and state governments must bolster security agencies and engage local communities in intelligence gathering to control such incidents effectively.
Meanwhile, the Indian Army disclosed that it is conducting an inquiry into the civilian deaths that occurred in the Poonch-Rajouri sector during an attack on army personnel by terrorists on December 21, resulting in the loss of four soldiers.
The army confirmed ongoing search operations in the Bafliaz area of Poonch district and the forested region of Dera ki Gali in Rajouri to apprehend suspected terrorists. They stated that reports on the deaths of three civilians in the area are being investigated, asserting their commitment to support and cooperate fully with the ongoing investigations.
Earlier responses from the Jammu and Kashmir administration included the announcement of compensation and job offers to the families of the deceased civilians near the site of the anti-terror operation in Poonch district. This initiative followed the ambush of two Army vehicles by heavily armed terrorists in the forest area of Dera ki Gali in Rajouri, which led to casualties among Army personnel.
Notably, defence sources indicated Pakistan’s alleged attempts to reignite terrorism in the Rajouri-Poonch sector by suggesting the presence of 25-30 Pakistani terrorists hiding in the region’s forested areas.
Reacting to the situation, JK National Conference MP Farooq Abdullah expressed concern, questioning the detention of locals by the police during the anti-terror operation. He emphasized the need for a sensitive approach, urging Home Minister Amit Shah to visit Surankote to address the sentiments of the people affected, emphasizing the importance of investigating the issue transparently to uphold human rights.
