General Pande Addresses Terrorism Surge in Rajouri-Poonch with Vigilant Measures and Tech Focus
Army Chief General Manoj Pande has expressed deep concern about recent developments in the Rajouri-Poonch area of Jammu and Kashmir, stating that the past six months have been an area of worry. According to him, the adversary has activated proxy outfits and promoted terrorism in the region.
In an annual conference in Delhi, General Pande highlighted the measures taken by the army to address the situation, stating that actions have been initiated to prevent people from feeling alienated. He also mentioned the adoption of the affected village in Poonch as part of the army’s efforts to connect with the local community.
General Pande noted that terrorism was fully dismantled in the area from 2003 until 2017-18. However, with the situation in the Valley normalizing, the adversary has shifted focus to Rajouri-Poonch, activating proxy outfits and promoting terrorism. He provided statistics on the army’s efforts, stating that 45 terrorists were killed in the region in recent years, with five infiltration bids foiled and 14 terrorists eliminated in the hinterland last year.
Addressing the issue of human intelligence in the Rajouri-Poonch area, General Pande emphasized the importance of strengthening human intelligence. He mentioned the army’s efforts to collaborate with other agencies and engage with the local community under Operation Sadbhavna, including personal interaction and the adoption of an affected village in Poonch.
General Pande asserted a zero-tolerance policy for human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing that the army has clear-cut directions to act professionally, and operations against terrorists will continue relentlessly. He acknowledged learning tactical lessons from the 2023 casualties in Jammu and expressed commitment to studying the adversary’s methods.
On the Indo-China talks, General Pande stated that ongoing discussions are happening at diplomatic and military levels. The goal is to return to the 2020 status quo, and troop reduction may be considered once achieved.
Discussing the Agnipath Scheme, he mentioned positive feedback and the need to address challenges. General Pande also touched on countering drone challenges, ruling out a separate corps and affirming that the army has procured adequate counter-drone equipment with a robust mechanism to address drone threats.
Highlighting technological advancements, he announced the rollout of 5G-ready handsets for soldiers under the army mobile ecosystem. General Pande concluded by declaring 2024 as a year of technology for the army, with 35,000 such sets expected to be available by the middle of the year, and 2,500 already in use.
