SRINAGAR: Following outbreaks in South Kashmir’s Anantnag and Kulgam districts, over 200 cases of gastroenteritis have emerged in the Hari Parigam area of Awantipora in Pulwama district in the last few days. Residents have reported symptoms including vomiting, loose motion, and cramps, leading to several hospitalizations.
An official from the Health Department indicated that while most patients are being treated in the Outpatient Department (OPD), a few have been admitted to the NTPHC Hari Parigam for more intensive care. The official also noted a decrease in the severity of the disease, with many patients beginning to recover.
“The situation is very much under control,” the official stated, highlighting ongoing efforts such as chlorination of water and a door-to-door survey to manage the outbreak.
Dr. Paramjeet Singh, Sectoral Medical Officer Dadsara, confirmed that around 200 patients have been treated so far, with a few receiving care at SDH Tral.
Efforts are underway to educate the public on disease prevention, emphasizing adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued by the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK).
Key SOPs include using boiled water for drinking and cooking, practicing proper hand hygiene with soap and disinfectants, and avoiding close contact with infected individuals. Immediate reporting of symptoms to the nearest health facility is crucial.
Special attention is recommended for children, the elderly, and those with comorbidities, ensuring they are kept away from affected individuals and monitored closely for early symptoms.
Additionally, residents are advised to avoid raw vegetables and salads, ensure fruits are thoroughly washed before consumption, and steer clear of street and junk foods.
Maintaining hydration and avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours are also advised to help prevent further spread of the disease.
