New Delhi: In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, a garlic vendor was subjected to a brutal assault, stripped naked, and paraded in a vegetable market in Noida after failing to repay a ₹3,000 debt he owed to a commission agent. This incident highlights the growing issue of debt-related violence in India’s agricultural sector.
Debt and Clout of Commission Agents (Aadthiyas):
The incident unfolded when the vendor had borrowed ₹5,600 from Sundar, a commission agent who plays a pivotal role as a link between farmers and buyers in the local mandis. These agents, locally known as aadthiyas, wield significant influence and power within the agricultural marketplaces. A month later, the vendor managed to repay ₹2,500 of the debt and requested some additional time to settle the remaining amount.
Brutal Assault and Public Humiliation:
However, instead of showing leniency, Sundar, along with his account and two laborers, subjected the garlic vendor to a horrifying ordeal. They forcibly took him into a stall, where they coerced him into stripping and mercilessly beat him with sticks. The vendor’s life was even threatened during this brutal attack. Shockingly, this incident did not end there, as he was then paraded naked through the crowded market. A video capturing this degrading act went viral on social media, sparking outrage and demands for swift justice against the perpetrators.
Legal Action and Accountability:
The initial FIR registered against the culprits included charges under the Indian Penal Code for offenses like voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful confinement, insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, and criminal intimidation. As the investigation progressed, additional charges of assault were added to the list. Furthermore, authorities have vowed to take action against individuals responsible for sharing the video of the incident.
Arrests Made, Search Ongoing:
In a significant development, two individuals involved in the horrific incident, including the agent Sundar and another accused named Bhagandas, have been apprehended by the police. However, the search for the remaining culprits is still underway, as law enforcement agencies are determined to ensure that justice is served in this distressing case.
