FWICE Declares Ban on Maldives Film Shoots Amidst India-Maldives Tensions
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has declared its intention to impose a ban on film shoots in the Maldives due to escalating tensions between India and the island nation. Expressing strong disapproval of recent statements made by Maldivian ministers regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the film industry workers’ union has called upon its members and others to participate in the boycott. In an official statement, FWICE urged filmmakers to consider alternative locations within India.
The official statement from FWICE reads, “In light of the escalating dispute between India and the Maldives stemming from the derogatory statements issued by three Maldivian ministers, FWICE, as the oldest and largest federal body representing workers, technicians, and artists in the media and entertainment industry, vehemently condemns the irresponsible and ludicrous remarks directed at the globally respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji by the ministers of the Maldives. In a show of solidarity with the nation and its diverse culture, FWICE members have resolved to boycott the Maldives as a shooting location. Instead, the union appeals to its members to select similar locations within India for their filming requirements, thereby contributing to the development of tourism in India.”
