Legislators of Iran’s new parliament have reinstated former Revolutionary Guards Commander Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf as the Speaker, state media reported. Qalibaf was elected to the post during the first session of the 12th term of the Islamic Consultative Assembly held at the parliament building in Tehran.
Qalibaf secured 198 votes out of 287, according to IRNA. His competitors, Mojtaba Zolnouri and Manouchehr Mottaki, received 60 and 5 votes, respectively, with 24 invalid votes also recorded.
The 2024 legislative elections in Iran were conducted in two rounds on March 1 and May 10. Following his election, Qalibaf’s name emerged as a possible candidate for the snap presidential election scheduled for June 28, which was necessitated by the death of President Ebrahim Raisi.
Raisi, the eighth president of Iran, died in a helicopter crash on May 19 along with his companions, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian. The crash occurred in the Varzaqan region of East Azerbaijan province. Raisi was laid to rest last Thursday at the shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in northeast Iran.
